Quick Charge 4

Qualcomms Quick Charge technology can be found in a large range of Smartphone that run on Qualcomms own Snapdragon processors. Some proprietary functionality will be opened up with the announced next version; Quick Charge 4 is compatible with USB-PD (Power Delivery) of the USB-IF (Universal Serial Bus Implementers Forum). Like USB-PD, Quick Charge 4 will be using Type-C sockets for Smartphone and power supplies.
For the connection between these electronically tagged cables that will publish the maximum current they are rated for. The cables will be able for either 3 Ampere of 5 Ampere. For plan cables, i.e. not featuring an ID-Chip a maximum of 1.5 Ampere will be allowed.
With Quick Charge 4 a Smartphone battery with a capacity of 2740 mAh is ought to be charged to 50% in five minutes. In comparison, for Quick Charge 3.0, Qualcomm stated 70% in half an hour. A straight direct comparison is not really possible as Lithium-Ion batteries don't charge linear and the charging speed decreases toward the full charge. Quick Charge 4 will be backwards compatible, meaning that existing power supplies can be used with newer Smartphone.

Snapdragon 835
New chips will be required for Quick Charge 4 like the new Smartphone-SoC Snapdragon 835 as well as the voltage regulators SMB1380 and SMB1281 that are also manufactured by Qualcomm. All three are scheduled to be available until summer 2017. The first devices featuring those can be expected at the Mobile World Congress in February 2017.

Forced to be PD compatible?
In the it is not clear if Qualcomm has opened it priority charging technology with regards to facilitate USB-PD.However, Google seems to be pushing for USB-PD quick charge technology to become the standard fro all Android device in the background.

Google is recommends explicitly in paragraph 7.7.1 of the Android 7.0 Compatibility Definition not to use any charging technologies that can cause compatibly issues with standard USB-PD. Besides Qualcomm this will be applicable to other quick charging technologies like Express (Mediatek), Vooc Flash Charge (Oppo) or Dash Charge (OnePlus).

The next sentence is even more explicit, whereby Google is reserving the right  to require the USB-PD as standard for all forthcoming Android versions.
